Common questions

Mulch or pine needles?

Both work. Hardwood mulch holds moisture and breaks down into the soil, and it suits formal beds. Pine straw is lighter, stays put on slopes better and is the traditional look across much of the Piedmont.

Question 1 of 3

How often should mulch be refreshed?

Once a year is typical, usually in spring. Beds that have thinned or faded early can take a light top-up in the fall instead of a full re-mulch.

Question 2 of 3

Can you rebuild bed lines that have disappeared?

Yes. Cutting a fresh, defined edge is one of the cheapest ways to make an established landscape look maintained again, and it holds for a full season.
